Honors & Awards

Credited with creating “a Japanese family” at UNC Charlotte, Fumie Kato, associate professor in the Department of Languages and Culture Studies in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, received the Bonnie E. Cone Early-Career Professorship in Teaching at the University Convocation on August 19, 2014.

UNC Charlotte researcher Margaret M. Quinlan has teamed with WOUB Center for Public Media and received a regional Emmy nomination for the documentary series, The Courage of Creativity. The series showcases the role of artists in fostering storytelling and well-being in health-related contexts.

A UNC Charlotte student has been chosen as a winner from among 1,500 entrants United Nations Contest “Many Languages One World.” Lauren Klein, an English major, submitted her essay in the Russian Language category.

In recognition of their focus on collaboration and communications, two students and a faculty member from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences have won recognition from the UNC Charlotte Health Academy this year.

Oscar de la Torre, an assistant professor in the Department of Africana Studies, received a 2014 College Educators Research Fellowship from the UNC-Duke Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

Of the ten exemplary students who were acknowledged during the annual university Honors and Awards Program held in mid-April, 3 are majors in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. The awards recognize students’ outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.

Celia Karp, a communication studies major and member of the inaugural class of Levine Scholars, has received a Fulbright grant, one of three UNC Charlotte students to receive Fulbright grants for 2014-15.

In acknowledgment of his prolific and high quality research record, UNC Charlotte faculty member Xingjian Liu has received the 2014 Emerging Scholar Award from the Regional Development and Planning Specialty Group (RDPSG) of the Association of American Geographers. Kimberly Buch from the Department of Psychology in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences is among the 17 recipients of the UNC Board of Governors Award for Teaching Excellence.

In recognition of his deep commitment to mentoring graduate students, Ryan Kilmer, professor of psychology, has received the 2014 Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award. Colleagues, university officials, community members and students gathered in his honor on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Harris Alumni Center at Johnson Glen.
